America had Deep Throat, the Netherlands had Plum blossom: the first big-budget porn film from the Low Countries. A professionally made film with beautiful camera work and a sincere message about the liberating effect of eroticism. The film revolves around Myriam (Diana de Koning), the nymphomaniac wife of an older gentleman, who has sex with men and women in her luxurious villa in the Betuwe. The beautifully imagined eroticism of Plum blossom attracted no fewer than 200,000 visitors in 1982, after which the film also became a big hit on video. Plum blossom is literally and figuratively a labor of love from Willem van Batenburg, who repeated his success a year later with a Scot in the Rose.
